Nestled amidst ancient oak woods in the breathtaking landscapes of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia), Llyn Mair is a perfect paddle boarding location for beginners, families and the more experienced. The lake bed is rich in plant life and the clear water gives stunning views of the magical tapestry below where viewed from above at times can feel like you are on a magic carpet.
During the spring and summer months pied flycatchers, wood warblers and redstarts can be seen with sightings of goshawk, nightjar and osprey also recorded. If you are an all year round paddler then during winter flocks of wild ducks visit this beautiful location.
Llyn Mair is a 14 acre lake which was once part of a country estate and was excavated in 1889 by William Edward Oakeley as a 21st birthday present for his daughter, Mair. During Spring and Summer the lake comes to life with Azaleas and Lillies where you can immerse yourself in beautiful natural surroundings.
There are a couple of launch spots from the picnic area near the car park with a couple of benches for you to enjoy a nice little picnic. The car park is relatively small and can park up to around 8 cars in total with free parking which is a bonus.
This is a little gem of a lake where you can finish off the day with a beautiful walk around the lake or through the forest along the path located by the car park up to the cafe at Tan-y-Bwlch train station for a coffee stop and a slice of cake.
A stunning place to paddle and one we absolutely adore but please be mindful this is a very quiet and tranquil nature reserve so please be respectful and as always take your litter home.
