If you’re ready for a paddle adventure that feels like stepping into a fairy tale, then Lake Vyrnwy or Llyn Efyrnwy in Welsh is the place to be and one of our favourite paddle board locations in Wales. Tucked away in the beautiful Berwyn mountains of Mid-Wales, this lake has it all, serene waters, lush scenery, enchanting wildlife, and the famous 19th Century Lake Vyrnwy Tower, which is a sight to behold from the water.
Why Paddle Board at Lake Vyrnwy?
Lake Vyrnwy is a reservoir, originally created in the 1880s to supply water to Liverpool. With its crystal-clear waters surrounded by pine forests and moorland, this lake offers a truly magical experience for paddle boarders. The lake stretches over 4.5 miles (7.5 km), providing plenty of space to explore and take in the sights. You’ll feel the peace of nature all around you, making this spot perfect for both beginners and experienced paddlers looking for a serene escape.
The lake is a nature reserve teaming with life so keep an eye out for rare birds like peregrine falcons, goshawks and the golden plover. There are also ospreys and herons that make appearances, especially near the shallower sections of the lake along with Redstarts and Woodpeckers.
During the months of July and August the lake surface can be busy with the iridescent colours of dragonflies busily darting above the surface which adds to the fairy tale experience on a lovely calm, warm, sunny day.
As you venture around the lake there are a number of lovely picnic sports to stop off and take in the scenery along with large carved leaf shaped benches and fantastic sculptures of dolphins on the beach near the old village.

To gain access to the Lake Vyrnwy you need to launch from the Boathouse only during periods they are open where buoyancy aids are mandatory. There is a fee which can be paid at launch where they operate a safety boat for an extra peace of mind. You can also hire Paddle Boards, Kayaks from the boathouse and details can be found at www.bethaniaadventure.co.uk.
Our preferred route is to travel left at the boathouse down the west side of the lake rounding the lake and approach the Tower from the opposite side. Please make sure to keep a distance of approximately 10 meters from the tower at all times. Continue towards the damn but just be a little wary if you are a novice paddler as you approach the damn wall due to the under currents changing directions as water rebounds off the damn. It can feel a little choppy at times when there is a little wind on the lake.
Respect the Wildlife Zones: Certain areas of the lake are protected for birdlife, so try to keep a respectful distance and avoid any “No Entry” zones.
The last time we went to Lake Vyrnwy you could only go as far as the large beach as the bottom half of the lake is RSPB and reserved as a sanctuary for wildlife so, please check in advance. Even with the bottom half of the lake restricted its still a beautiful paddle and one of our favourite spots to visit in Wales.

Exploring the Lake: What to See
As you paddle, you’ll be surrounded by the beauty of Snowdonia National Park and the Berwyn Mountains in the distance. Here are some highlights to watch for:
- The Dam: The towering Victorian dam is a marvel of engineering and an Instagram-worthy backdrop. When the water overflows, you might even get treated to the sight of cascading waterfalls spilling from the dam.
- The Straining Tower: This stunning, Gothic-style stone tower stands right in the water and looks like something out of a fantasy movie. You can paddle close for a great view – just avoid the intake points.
- Mini Islands and Rocky Outcrops: As you paddle along, you’ll find small islands and rocky outcrops along the lake, adding to the magical atmosphere. These make great spots for a quick rest or photo op.
Make the Most of Your Visit
There’s plenty more to do once you’re done on the water, so why not make a full day or even a weekend of it?
- Walk the Lake’s Edge: There’s a lovely trail that circles the lake, giving you a completely different perspective of the surrounding forest and mountains.
- Bird Watching at RSPB Hide: For those passionate about birds, the RSPB hide on the lake offers a chance to spot rare birds in a quiet setting.
- Lake Vyrnwy Hotel and Spa: If you’re looking for a little luxury, head to the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel for some fantastic food or even a spa day to unwind after paddling.
- Explore Llanwddyn Village: The charming village near the lake is home to a few quaint shops and a small café, perfect for a post-paddle bite or a hot drink
Getting There and Parking
Lake Vyrnwy is located just a short drive from the village of Llanwddyn, about an hour from Shrewsbury and two hours from Liverpool and Manchester.
- Main Car Park: The most convenient place to park is at the main visitor center, where you’ll find ample parking along with toilet facilities and a café.
- Launch Parking: Parking at the layby behind the boathouse for easy access to the water.
Wildlife Watching on Lake Vyrnwy
If you’re a nature lover, Lake Vyrnwy is an absolute dream for wildlife watching. The lake and surrounding area are a designated RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) reserve, so you’re in for some amazing birdlife and other creatures:
- Birds: Keep an eye out for rare birds like peregrine falcons, goshawks, and the golden plover. There are also ospreys and herons that make appearances, especially near the shallower sections of the lake.
- Otters: If you’re lucky, you might spot an otter along the shoreline, particularly in the early mornings or evenings when they’re more active.
- Wildfowl and Fish: The lake is home to various fish, including brown trout, and the shores attract a range of ducks, geese, and swans. Paddle quietly to catch sight of them in their natural habitat.
