Outdoor Master Shark 2S Review

First Impressions of the OutdoorMaster Shark 2S

Unboxing and Setup

The Shark 2S arrives in a compact box with the pump, high-pressure hose, nozzle adapters, USB-C cable, 12 V car cable and instructions. Removing the pump from the box the pump feels solid but surprisingly not heavy.

The overall build quality feels premium with a matte housing that resists fingerprints and feels robust. The integrated carry handle balances the weight well and the underside has anti-slip rubber pads, handy for resting the pump on top of a board while inflating.

While handling the pump what surprised me straight away was that it felt noticeably lighter than our Shark 3. The Shark 2S electric pump weighs 1.9 kg and a fairly compact size at 285mm (L) x 240.6mm (W) x 128.6mm (H).

Buttons & Screen

The interface is clear and simple: four buttons (power, +, –, and mode) plus a bright LCD. As with a lot of devices these days the screen looks great but we do feel that that they are designed more for looks than function.

The reason we say this is that it looks great in the shade or indoors but outside on a bright sunny day you will have to cup your hands round it to read it. We would prefer an old school basic screen, but it is no big deal and it certainly looks more modern with this type of display when you can actually see it.

Multiple Inflation Modes

There are 3 selectable inflation modes SUP, Kite and Mat which are selectable by pressing the mode button (2nd button from the left). The great thing about the Shark 2S is that it will store your last used pressures like a preset so there is no need to keep setting desired pressures if you are using the same.

  • SUP Mode: Normal dual stage mode for inflating paddle boards up to 20 psi
  • Kite Mode: This is just another dual stage mode and can basically be used as a second preset
  • Mat Mode: A timed inflation mode that runs in stage 1 with the fan only

Hose Fitment & Length

The reinforced hose feels premium, with a secure screw on connector to secure the hose to the pump and twist lock quick fit connectors for the 8 interchangeable adapters for SUPs, Kites, Mattresses, pretty much any inflatable. The hose is long enough (4.5 ft) to reach the valve on a SUP without the need for awkward pump angles.

USB Output

A great addition to the Shark 2S is the USB output which means you can use it as a power bank in those times of need and tap into any available power. This is great if you find that your mobile phone is running low and need to top up the charge to get you by, a great feature.

Outdoor Master Shark 2S being used to inflate a Jobe Loa Paddleboard

Real world Performance and testing

To test the Shark 2S pump and put it through its paces we headed to Bala Lake in North Wales on a hot sunny Sunday afternoon. At the same time we were also testing the Jobe Loa so we used the Shark 2S to inflate this larger 360Ltr board to see how it faired.

Inflation Power and Speed

In our tests it took just over 12 minutes to inflate the Loa to 16 PSI not the quickest especially compared to the Outdoor Master Shark 3 and did take longer than we expected however the battery life was excellent. The pump uses dual-stage technology with stage 1 reaching 350L/min at 1PSI and Stage 2 70L/min at 20PSI.

This is where these rechargeable pumps come in to their own when everyone around us was sweating buckets getting a serious workout inflating their boards we were simply taking in the surroundings with a nice cold drink. The auto shut off feature of these electric pumps is a game changer where once it reaches the desired pressure it switches off so there is no need to board hover, just sit back, relax and let the pump do all the work.

Noise Levels

One of the most welcome upgrades over the Shark II is reduced noise. At around 75 dB at 1 meter, the Shark 2S is noticeably quieter than many electric paddle board pumps. Outdoor Master must have changed the internal pump mechanism over the Shark II which is a welcomed upgrade.

The pump goes through a two-stage inflation process, the first phase is quieter than the second longer phase as the pump works hard to get to those final higher PSI’s. Overall the pump does seem to be quieter than most of the other pumps we have tried and thankfully has a different sound to the Outdoor Master Shark II pump which I personally found rather annoying.

Please bear in mind the Shark 2S pump like any other electric pump is still quite loud so be thoughtful during those early morning paddles of people around you.

Rechargeable Battery Life

This is where the Shark 2S shines! We didn’t check the Valve pin position on the Loa before we started inflating it so when we removed the hose we lost 3 PSI and had to inflate it for a second time and also used the pump on a second standard 10’6 board to inflate it to 15 PSI. After this the battery indicator was showing that it had only used 1 bar on its battery indicator.

Outdoor Master Claim the battery can inflate and deflate 4 paddleboards and in our tests it easily managed to inflate 4 of our boards on a single charge with power to spare which is a big advantage over other pumps in the Outdoor Master line up such as the Shark 3.

Ergonomics and Ease of Use

It really couldn’t be easier, the Shark 2S’s LCD display is bright and easy to read and understand except in direct sunlight where you will find yourself cupping your hands around the screen to see it. You simply:

  1. Attach the hose
  2. Set your target PSI
  3. Press start

The pump automatically shuts off when it reaches the set pressure.

  • Controls: Buttons have a satisfying click and aren’t overly sensitive, no accidental presses.
  • Screen Visibility: Poor due to glare in direct sunlight but good if in the shade. You will find yourself cupping your hands around the display to read it at times.
  • Carrying: The built in handle and balanced weight make it comfortable for short walks from car to shore.
  • Hose Storage: No built in hose storage, you’ll need to wrap it separately or in a carry bag. Outdoor Master please add this to your list of improvements for future models!
  • Ventilation: Intake/exhaust vents are positioned away from the base but we advise setting it on your paddle board, towel or mat when in use not directly on sand.

Portability & Charging

Weighing in at approximately 1.8 kg and with a built-in carry handle, the Shark 2S is easy to transport. USB-C charging is a welcome upgrade over the Shark II where we can top it up from a power bank or car.

Charge times:

USB-C: Using a standard USB-C power source it took just over 6 hours. However using a 45W charger to fast charge it took just over 2 hours.

12 V Car Socket: ~ 8 Hours

You can inflate while plugged into a Car Auxiliary socket so even if you do manage to run out of battery and close to a vehicle you can still use the pump. This is a great feature which many other rechargeable battery pumps do not offer.

Deflation Performance

The Shark 2s has a deflate mode that pulls air out of your paddleboard. We use this sometimes when in a rush and will often first roll the SUP with the Orkney valve open to remove most of the air then use the pump to remove any remaining air which can make life easier to fit some SUPs into their carry bags.

This can definitely help in rolling your SUP tighter and faster than manual rolling.

Real-World Use after a few weeks

We have been using the Outdoor Master Shark 2S exclusively now for a few weeks while we have been off grid camping and paddle boarding and during that time the battery has been reliable in between charges.

This has been a welcomed upgrade for us over the Outdoor Master Shark 3 purely in terms of its battery life allowing us to inflate both our Jobe Duna Elites to 18 PSI a couple of times in-between top up charges. With the Shark 3 we find we can only fully inflate both our Duna’s once (3 Duna paddle boards at a push if we drop the target PSI slightly).

We have been caught out with the Shark 3 a couple of times when we have not been able to charge between uses and where the Shark 2S has given us more freedom. It is also worth pointing out that if you car is close enough to the waters edge you can run these pumps off the vehicle Aux socket however most of the time for us it would mean a long walk carrying inflated boards which can be less than practical and the benefit of using a Battery Rechargeable Inflatable SUP Pump.

Although we are very impressed with the battery life the inflation time is much longer compared to our Shark 3 which we do find a little frustrating at times where it takes time to reach those higher PSIs. But this is the compromise that Outdoor Master have to make to give the extended battery life and where you have to decide what is a priority to you.

For comparison the Shark 2S takes approximately 9 mins 48 Sec to inflate our 11″6′ x 31′ x 6′ Touring Boards to 18PSI where the Outdoor Master Shark 3 takes just 5 mins 22 Sec.

Key Advantages of the Outdoor Master Shark 2S

Convenience

The main advantage of the Shark 2S like any rechargeable electric paddleboard pump is the sheer convenience it brings to your SUP routine. After using various pumps over the last couple of years it is the second item that’s goes in the car behind the paddle boards of course.

We seriously couldn’t live without them especially if you have a number of boards to inflate and even if you are a solo paddler then it will make your life easier.

Can use Two power Sources

This is where a Battery rechargeable electric pump shines with the convenience of running the pump off its own internal battery or car auxiliary power socket. With a rechargeable pump you have the best of both worlds allowing you to inflate pretty much any inflatable away from a vehicle which for us makes the investment worthwhile over a standard plugin electric pump.

Versatility and Compatibility

Like most of the Battery Outdoor Master Pump range the versatility of these pumps is fantastic. It comes with 8 nozzle attachments, so it’s compatible with SUPs, inflatable kayaks, kites, mattresses and even boats. We use them for all our inflatables not just our SUPs, including inflating our kites and kayaks.

Durability and Long-Term Use

After using the Shark 2S for a few weeks everything still functions as it should the hose and attachments haven’t worn out as you would expect and the battery remains reliable basically still performs like new and will update this post if we do encounter any issues.

Any Downsides?

Price Point

You can pickup the Outdoor Master Shark 2S for £125 here at SUP Funk and although it’s not the most expensive pump on the market, £25 cheaper than the Outdoor Master Shark 3, you wouldn’t say its cheap either. So I have put this as a downside but in our opinion, it’s worth every penny.

When you consider the convenience, durability and the fact that it inflates multiple boards on a single charge, the value becomes clear. However, if you’re a casual paddler who only goes out a few times a year, you might not need such a high-end pump.

Recharge Time

The standard recharge time is just over 6 hours, which is manageable especially due to its battery life but is significantly improved to just over 2 hours using a fast 45W charger via the USB Type-C port. Please note a fast charger is not supplied and will need to be purchased separately.

Noise Concerns

As mentioned earlier although quieter than many other pumps on the market, the pump does make a noise and is something you need to be aware of and plan for by being mindful of other people and wildlife around you. This unfortunately is the downside of every electric powered SUP pump we have tried and something you just have to live with.

In those rare situations where you need to be quiet then you will just have to use a manual pump!

Comparison to Other Pumps

Manual Pumps vs. Electric Pumps

To be honest for convenience there really is no comparison and an electric pump wins hands down. I will say if we were feeling energetic and really putting our backs into our manual pump we could inflate a paddleboard quicker than using the Shark 2S. I would then probably need a rest for 10 minutes though before hitting the water which you don’t get using an electric pump.

There are benefits to the manual pump and times when you just have no choice and that is as previously mentioned where noise could be an issue or if going touring and wild camping for a few days where we don’t want to carry an electric pump with us on our paddle boards.

A rechargeable electric pump is a worthy addition to anybodies paddleboard gear and in our opinion a fantastic accessory to have but you will always need to keep a manual pump to hand just incase!

Other Electric Pumps on the Market

There are many SUP Pumps on the market and it can be a little overwhelming but we love the Outdoor Master range and have been using them for years. Yes, I think they possibly do too many variations which can be confusing for buyers but each serves a different purpose.

Outdoor Master manufacture top quality pumps with great features at varying price points and for us a market leader in Inflatable Paddle Board Pumps. If you use a pump that you think is better get in touch as we would love to put it through its paces.

Who is the Outdoor Master Shark 2S Best For?

The Shark 2S is perfect for a few different types of paddlers:

  • Frequent Paddlers: If you’re on the water regularly and want to make the process of inflating your board easier and not in a rush to hit the water then this pump will make your life easier.
  • Group Paddlers: Anyone who often paddles with friends or family and inflates multiple boards will love the battery life and convenience of the Shark 2S over many other pumps.
  • Casual Paddlers: Even if you only paddle occasionally, the Shark 2S adds a level of ease that makes each outing more enjoyable. It’s especially useful for people who may struggle with manual pumping especially if inflating multiple boards.

Final Verdict

The Outdoor Master Shark 2S is a great all round rechargeable electric pump and our only disappointment being the inflation times. With the Shark 2S you are compromising speed for extended battery life which is where this pump fits in the Outdoor Master Pump line up.

We are big fans of the Outdoor Master Shark 3 but have found it restrictive due to the battery life at times when we are off grid for a couple of days and have no way of recharging.  With the Shark 2S we know that we can inflate both our boards at least twice on a single charge which is something we are willing to sacrifice the speed for.

If you are in rush and want your paddle board inflated in the quickest possible time to get you on the water and only inflating a couple of boards in-between paddles then we would recommend looking at the Shark 3.

You can read here our Outdoor Master Shark 3 Review which in our opinion is the best pump we have tested and our goto pump for daily outings. However this has now been replaced with the Shark 2S when we know we won’t have a rechargeable power source for a couple of days.

Would we recommend it to friends? Absolutely!
