When planning a new Paddle boarding adventure our dream locations have serene mountain landscapes and crystal clear waters where we can escape the day to day.
Llynnau Mymbyr is a stunning lake nestled in the heart of the Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) which offers a SUP paddler’s paradise. Its crystal clear waters, breathtaking scenery of Yr Wyddfa, Glyderau and Moel Siabod mountain ranges along with diverse wildlife makes it a must visit for anyone seeking a peaceful and unforgettable experience.
Llynnau Mymbyr are two lakes but strictly speaking one which has nearly been cut off over the years due to the growth of the delta where it gives the appearance of a bend in the lake from certain viewpoints. The lake is around 0.75 mile (1.2km) in length with a maximum depth of 30ft and is fed by the river Nant-y-gwryd (Nantygwryd) which is sourced from Llyn Cwm-y-ffynnon.
Located in the village of Capel Curig, there is a lay-by parking just off the A4086 near the Plas Y Brenin National Outdoor Centre. Access is through the gate and down the steps across a footbridge and turn right following the footpath to the waters edge. This is a little bit of a walk unfortunately but parking maybe possible for easier access from the Plas Y Brenin Outdoor centre if pre arranged with them.
Pease do not travel further down the A4086 and launch from the next lay-by above the lower lake by the large boulders as the banks here are important nesting sites for grass snakes.
Launch from a gravel slipway after the footbridge at the east end of the lake and round the jetty and boat house following the beautiful southern wooded shore line taking in the magical views of the Snowdon Horseshoe. Stay upstream from the of the bridge to avoid the faster flowing water from the river. Great views of the Glyderau can also be had as you travel along the shore line up to the narrows.
As you pass through the narrows into the second lake keep a lookout in the reedbeds for wildlife. Continue following the shoreline and circle beneath the Garth Farm Campsite where the Nant-y-gwryd (Nantygwryd) enters the lake. Here you will find a couple of places to stop off and take in the beautiful surrounds before the return journey.
The route back follows the craggier northern shore with views of Craig Wen and the Crimpiau in the distance towering over the village of Capel Curig. Return back through the narrows and continue to follow the northern shore until you cut back across to the launch slipway.
If you have the energy and time allows you can finish the day off with a short climb up the Crimpiau for wonderful views of Lynn Mymbyr with the distant Snowdon Horseshoe making a stunning backdrop destination. A magnificent viewpoint to gather your thoughts and watch the sun go down over the Eryri National Park.
What a beautiful way to end a stunning day SUP Paddle boarding! Always be mindful that you are in the mountains and they do have their own weather systems where it can change very quickly so always keep an eye on the weather and enjoy.
