Why We Started Looking for Another Paddle Board Brand

One of the best things about running SUP Funk is that we get to speak with paddle boarders every single day.

Some customers are looking for a premium touring board to tackle long-distance adventures. Others are buying their very first paddle board and simply want something that’s well made, easy to paddle and built to last.

Over the past year, one conversation kept coming up.

People wanted something better than the countless low-cost inflatable paddle boards appearing online, but they weren’t necessarily looking to spend £500 on a premium paddleboard.

When we looked at our own range, we realised there was a gap.

We had some fantastic premium paddle boards, but we wanted to offer more choice for people who were looking for exceptional quality at a more accessible price.

Not the cheapest boards on the market.

Finding that balance isn’t easy, which is why we spent months researching brands before we found MOAI.

We Tested MOAI Before We Agreed to Sell Them

At SUP Funk, we believe there’s only one proper way to choose a new brand.

Get it on the water.

So before we partnered with MOAI, we bought a couple of their boards ourselves and spent time paddling them in the same way our customers would.

We took them out on lakes, enjoyed relaxed family paddles and spent time looking beyond the specifications on the website.

• How stiff did they feel?
• How well did they glide?
• Did the construction live up to the claims?
• Could we honestly recommend them to our customers?

The answer was yes. In fact, we were pleasantly surprised.

The quality of the construction, the finish, the accessories and the overall paddling experience all exceeded our expectations for this price point.

By the end of our testing, the decision had become an easy one.

MOAI had earned a place at SUP Funk.

Why We Were So Impressed

Paddleboard Construction

One of the biggest reasons we chose MOAI is their construction.

The adult boards in the range use MSL construction with Fusion technology, creating a board that’s lighter, stiffer and more durable than many traditional single-layer inflatable paddle boards that you will find around the same price point.

What impressed us most is that MOAI have managed to offer this level of construction as a package without pushing the price into premium territory meaning you get a more premium and durable paddleboard similar in price to many well know single layer paddleboards available on the market.

Many paddle boards available in the UK at a similar price will still use older/cheaper single-layer construction.

Performance

We initially purchased a couple of MOAI boards to test out on the water and put them through their paces and were very surprised by the results.

The All-Round 10’6 felt very stable underfoot, tracked well but we were also surprised by their efficiency and speed.

The 12.8 Touring board felt well balanced, glides well making it a great entry level touring paddleboard.

Value

Each MOAI paddleboard package comes complete with a paddle, leash, fin and storage bag with wheels, everything you need to get on the water other than a Buoyancy Aid. With MOAI, you’re getting premium materials and construction at a price that’s surprisingly achievable.
