There’s something rather lovely about spending an afternoon outdoors with your favourite music playing. Perhaps you’re relaxing in the garden with friends, enjoying a weekend away in the campervan or settling down beside the water after a day of adventures. Whatever the occasion, a good speaker can make those moments even more enjoyable, especially when it sounds great and isn’t bothered by the occasional splash or unexpected British downpour!
The Speaqua Barnacle X waterproof Bluetooth speaker is the largest and most powerful speaker in the Barnacle range, combining fuller sound and deeper bass with colourful built-in lighting and the rugged waterproof design we’ve come to appreciate from Speaqua. It’s designed for people who enjoy taking their music everywhere, whether that’s out on the water, camping for the weekend or simply relaxing at home.
What particularly appeals to us about the Barnacle X is that it isn’t limited to one activity. We love paddleboarding, of course, but not every day is spent on the water, and having a speaker that’s equally useful around the house, in the garden or on holiday makes it a much more versatile piece of equipment.
One of the biggest reasons to choose the Barnacle X over the smaller speakers in the Speaqua range is its sound. The larger design delivers more powerful audio with deeper bass, making it particularly appealing when you want music to fill a space rather than simply provide a little background listening.
It also features separate indoor and outdoor EQ settings, allowing you to adjust the sound to suit your surroundings. That makes sense when you think about how differently music behaves in a room compared with an open garden or campsite. Whether you’re enjoying an album indoors or listening outside with friends, you can choose the setting that works best for the occasion.
Of course, more powerful sound does come with a larger speaker, and that’s worth considering. If you’re looking for something that takes up very little space on your paddleboard, one of the smaller Barnacle models may be more convenient. But if fuller sound is high on your list of priorities and you want a speaker you’ll use across lots of different activities, the Barnacle X becomes a very appealing option.
Sound isn’t the only thing that makes the Barnacle X different. It also has built-in RGB lighting, with five patterns that can change the atmosphere depending on what you’re doing. You can choose a simple white light, rotating colours, gently breathing effects or lighting that moves and responds to the rhythm of your music.
We can see this being particularly enjoyable during summer evenings in the garden, sitting outside the campervan, on the beach or relaxing with friends after a day outdoors. It’s a nice additional feature that gives the speaker a little more personality, without needing to carry separate lighting equipment. And if you’re enjoying a quieter evening, you can always turn the lights off and just listen to the music.
One of our favourite features of the Speaqua Barnacle range is the ability to listen to music without needing a constant Bluetooth connection to your phone. The Speaqua Barnacle X includes 8GB of built-in storage, enough for up to 2,000 songs, so you can transfer compatible MP3 files from your computer and play them directly through the speaker.
It’s a particularly useful feature when you’re out on the water, camping or somewhere you’d rather keep your phone safely tucked away. You can still stream music over Bluetooth whenever you prefer, but having the option to leave your phone alone is rather refreshing, especially when the whole reason for heading outdoors was to get away from screens for a while!
Like the other speakers in the Barnacle range, the Barnacle X has been designed with water and outdoor activities firmly in mind. Its IP68 waterproof rating, floating construction and resistance to dust, sand and knocks make it a practical companion for days beside the sea, boating trips, camping adventures and plenty of everyday situations where an ordinary speaker might be rather less at home.
It’s also surprisingly versatile when it comes to mounting. The removable suction cup allows you to attach it to suitable smooth, clean surfaces, while the built-in ¼-inch thread and included GoPro mount adapter provide other attachment options. There’s also a carabiner for hanging it from suitable equipment around camp or when travelling. As with any speaker used on the water, we’d always recommend checking that it’s securely attached before setting off.
We particularly like that these features aren’t just useful for paddleboarding and kayaking. You could take the Barnacle X on the boat, attach it somewhere suitable around the campsite or use it in the bathroom without worrying about the occasional splash. It’s the sort of versatility that makes a speaker useful throughout the year, rather than something that only comes out for summer holidays.
If you enjoy getting friends and family together, the Barnacle X has another clever feature. Speaqua’s Party Pairing allows multiple compatible speakers to connect, with the manufacturer advertising support for more than 150. It’s quite a remarkable number, although we’re not sure we’d ever manage to organise a gathering that needed quite so many! Where we’ve found this feature particularly useful is during gatherings at home, placing a couple of speakers around the garden to create a fuller, more evenly distributed sound. Rather than having all the music coming from one corner, everyone can enjoy the same music wherever they’re sitting, and because the speakers are synchronised, everything plays together beautifully.
The useful part is that you don’t need an app or Wi-Fi connection to pair compatible speakers, making it easier to create a larger listening area when the occasion calls for it. Add up to 12 hours of battery life under suitable conditions, and you’ve got plenty of time to enjoy an afternoon outdoors that turns into a relaxed evening.
We think the Barnacle X makes the most sense for someone who wants a genuinely versatile waterproof Bluetooth speaker, particularly if crystal clear sound quality, deeper bass and the built-in lighting are important. It’s a lovely option for garden gatherings, weekends away, camping, boating and everyday listening around the home, with the added reassurance of a design made to cope with outdoor adventures.
It can certainly come paddleboarding too, but we wouldn’t automatically recommend it over the smaller models for that particular activity. If your main priority is having music on your board without taking up too much room, the Speaqua Barnacle Pro 2.0 is probably where we’d start. The Speaqua Vibe 3.0 offers another choice if you’d like more sound while retaining a more compact design than the Barnacle X.
For us, that’s what makes the Speaqua range so interesting. There isn’t one speaker that will suit everyone, and choosing the right one really comes down to where you’ll use it most. The Barnacle X is the option we’d look towards when you want a bigger sound, a little more atmosphere and a speaker that’s just as comfortable providing music for a garden evening as it is accompanying you on your next outdoor adventure.

Song capacity depends on file size. The suction cup requires a suitable smooth, clean surface.
We think these are two of its most appealing uses. The Barnacle X suits people who want a larger speaker to enjoy across different settings, from afternoons in the garden to weekends beside the campervan. It’s also a practical choice for listening at home, so it needn’t sit with the camping kit between trips.
Yes. The Barnacle X has an IP68 waterproof rating and floats, making it suitable for use around water. Follow the supplied instructions for preparing the speaker before water exposure and looking after it afterwards.
Yes. Its 8GB storage holds up to 2,000 songs, allowing playback without a Bluetooth connection. Transfer compatible MP3 files from your computer before heading out.
To load music, switch the speaker on, connect it to your computer using a suitable USB data cable and copy your MP3 files into the speaker’s folder. Safely eject it when you’ve finished. The number of songs you can store depends on file size.
The built-in RGB lighting offers five patterns: solid white, tempo rotations, rhythm-based brightness, a rotating colour ring and breathing lights. It’s a fun extra for garden gatherings, parties and evenings at camp, letting you choose an effect to suit the occasion.
Yes. Speaqua recommends its removable suction cup for smooth, clean shower tiles. Choose a suitable surface and check that it is firmly attached before use. It’s an easy way to enjoy the speaker between outdoor adventures.
Party Pairing connects compatible speakers without an app or Wi-Fi. Speaqua advertises support for more than 150 speakers, although a much smaller setup is likely to be enough for most gatherings.
Compatibility matters: don’t assume it will connect to any Bluetooth speaker other than the Speaqua range with the built in pairing feature.
Speaqua quotes up to 12 hours of playback. Actual runtime depends on how you use it, including volume and lighting settings, so treat this as a maximum rather than a guaranteed listening time.
We’d point you towards the Barnacle X if you want a larger speaker for garden evenings, camping, boating and everyday listening, and crystal clear fuller sound is more important than keeping your kit compact.
For paddleboarding, the smaller Barnacle Pro 2.0 or Vibe 3.0 will often be the more convenient choice. The X can come along too, but it’s worth considering how much space you want to give it on your board. The best choice is the one that suits where you’ll actually use it most.
